Did you ever think that a fashion statement could lead you to an early grave? Unfortunately, it can. Oral piercings are actually more dangerous than many people realize. While some problems may not occur right away, there are a number of risks involved with oral piercings. In other words, oral piercings require a significant amount of care. Before we get to caring for oral piercings, let's look at the risks involved.
Oral piercings obviously cause pain. This is something you should expect before getting the procedure done. Unfortunately, that's not the only risk involved with oral piercings. Oral piercings can also cause chipped/cracked teeth, torn gums, infection, blood clots and blood poisoning. If that's not enough to change your mind, consider this- some oral piercings have been known to hit major blood vessels, which can cause you to bleed excessively. The most deadly risk though, involves swelling. On rare occasions, tongue piercings have swollen to the point that they have caused people's airways to become blocked.
If you've already taken the plunge, and have oral piercings, you must take care of them. Depending on the oral piercing, it could take 4 weeks to two months to heal. During this time, you will need to avoid alcohol, tobacco products and hard/sticky/spicy foods. You will also need to brush your teeth regularly and rinse with mouthwash. It also helps to rinse your mouth with salt water several times a day. Above all, it's imperative to contact your dentist immediately should you experience any problems with your oral piercings.
