 (ARA) - Are you are blessed with a good kid -- an honest, thoughtful, obedient child who would never go looking for pornography while online? Even if you really are lucky enough to have that dream child, it still doesn't mean he or she is safe from seeing Internet porn.
Your child may not be looking for porn, but the pornographers are actively seeking the eyes of your child. Up to 90 percent of kids ages 8 to 16 have viewed pornography on the Internet, according to research by the London School of Economics. In most cases, the children accessed sex sites unintentionally, often while in the process of doing homework.
How can this happen? How can seemingly innocent search terms access information and pictures no parent wants their child to see? Certainly, some purveyors of adult material are only marketing to adults. Others, however, are actively coding their Web sites with key words designed to infiltrate their sites into results for even the most innocuous, nonsexual searches.
Here's another frightening fact: 79 percent of unwanted youth exposure to pornography occurs in the home, according to the report "Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later." The message is that your child is at risk of seeing inappropriate material as soon as she goes online, even if she is obedient and you are attentive.
The good news is, you can protect your child from viewing online pornography. It simply requires vigilance and the right tools. Be sure to follow the sound advice you've probably already heard about protecting kids while online, including keeping computers in public areas of your home, rather than in kids' rooms, discussing proper Internet use with kids, and keeping an eye on their social networking site friends.
