Statement by Bausch & Lomb on Fungal Keratitis Issue

Good Eye Health

Updated: 4/17/2006 1:43:53 PM

Bausch & Lomb have today asked U.S. retailers to remove ReNu(R) with MoistureLoc(R) made in the company's U.S. plant from their shelves temporarily, and recommended that consumers switch to another lens care solution for the time being, until the investigation of reports of fungal keratitis infections among contact lens wearers in the United States and Asia is concluded. The company initiated the voluntary market withdrawal in order to eliminate any confusion among U.S. contact lens wearers about what to do

while the investigation is ongoing.

Today's action does not apply to ReNu with MoistureLoc manufactured at the Milan plant which supplies retailers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Other Bausch & Lomb products are NOT affected.

We would like to emphasise that no unusual trends of fungal keratitis have been reported within Europe, the Middle East and Africa. All ReNu multi-purpose solutions manufactured in Milan utilise different bottle components, as well as a different sterilisation method for these components,

than the US manufacturing process.

All Bausch & Lomb ReNu solutions are manufactured to ISO 13485:2003 standards and rigorously tested for biocidal efficacy. Bausch & Lomb has extensively tested and retested its ReNu contact lens solutions, as well as its manufacturing facilities. No scientific data exist to suggest a causal relationship between any Bausch & Lomb products and the infections reported.

Esther da Silva, Vice President for Vision Care Europe, Middle East and Africa comments, "Bausch & Lomb is cooperating with health authorities and leading experts in the fields of microbiology, epidemiology and ophthalmology, in the United States, in a multi-pronged, multi-national

effort to determine the root cause of the incidences."

da Silva continues, "We want to reassure all our consumers that we are taking every possible step to ensure their health and safety."

Bausch & Lomb wants to remind contact lens users how important it is to take proper care in cleaning and storing their lenses, and to follow the advice of their eye care professionals. Proper lens care is key to maintaining good eye health.
