Dental health initiative pays for Halloween candy
Updated: 9/30/2009 7:00:39 PM
Dental health initiative pays for Halloween candyFor some dentists, the Halloween holiday can be a disastrous time for the dental health of their younger patients.

With children gearing up to put on costumes to go door-to-door asking for candy, it can mean a multitude of cavities waiting to be formed.
However, one Massachusetts dentists is taking an innovative approach to help young patients avoid developing dental caries.

Dr Thomas Pushak of Lexington has been collecting Halloween candy from local children for the past 15 years, the Lexington Minutemen reports. His trick? He pays for it.

Pushak offers to buy up to five pounds of Halloween candy from trick-or-treaters at $2 a pound. This means if a child had a particularly successful night, they can make up to $10 from the dentist.

The dentist told the news provider that the children selling their candy to him don't have to be current patients and that his aim is to improve the dental health of young people.

But avoiding candy is just part of the solution toward optimal dental health.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly.
