With more than 100 million Americans living without dental care, it will come as no surprise to some that many men are not looking after their teeth.

Today, many people are concerned with how they look. Some do their best to follow the latest styles or get their hair cut at the trendiest boutique salons. But many of the same people are American males who have poor dental hygiene, according to Chicago Defender.

"Men just usually put off medical issues," said Dr Ozzie Smith, a dentist in Hyde Park, Chicago, to the news source. "Either they don't want to hear any bad news, or, if they feel a little pain they'll just shrug it off. They figure they'll be fine in a couple of days if they take a painkiller."

Oral cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases a person can contract, reports the publication. Most of the time, it first appears as tiny white or red sores in the mouth, lips, gums or tongue. Because the spots are inside the mouth, they are difficult to see, so they are sometimes ignored. People who smoke and drink are at a higher risk of developing oral cancer.

The American Dental Association (ADA) says that oral cancer is easy to treat so long as it's detected early. Unfortunately, only about 50 percent of people who have an advanced case of the disease survive more than five years. The ADA says that regular visits to the dentist is a good way to watch out for oral cancer.
