AARP and UnitedHealth Group today announce the offering of the “AARP MedicareRx Plan” in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and in all five U.S. Territories. We are committed to providing a high-quality prescription drug offering that is simple in design, easy to use and highly customized for Medicare beneficiaries.AARP believes that prescription drug coverage in Medicare is an important step forward in providing access to affordable prescription drugs to older Americans and those with disabilities. The “AARP MedicareRx Plan” is competitively priced and below the national average for such plans, has a zero deductible or first-dollar coverage, and it provides convenient access to prescription drugs through the availability of over 90 percent of the nation’s retail pharmacies as well as through mail-order services – whichever best suits the needs of recipients.
The AARP plan also provides access to a wide range of drugs, including all of the drugs that our most frequently used by our pharmacy mail order members. UnitedHealth Group priced the plan so that it will be stable and affordable going forward, rather than using "loss leader" tactics to attract members today and then raising their costs substantially tomorrow.
AARP continues to work on many fronts to lower drug costs for all Americans. When it comes to helping those in Medicare, no one knows beneficiaries as well as AARP. The new “AARP MedicareRx Plan” is a natural extension of our long legacy of providing affordable prescription drugs to older Americans. AARP’s mail order pharmacy began in 1959 and continues today with over 2 million members relying on AARP for prescription drug savings through drug card offerings as well as Medigap insurance plans with pharmacy coverage.
Regardless of which plan people choose, AARP’s overall goal is to help all Medicare beneficiaries understand the options available to them so that they can make informed decisions about their own prescription drug needs. AARP has a free, easy-to-understand publication available to members and non-members alike that contains information about the new Medicare drug program. The free guide can be obtained by visiting www.aarp.org/medicarerx, or by calling toll free 1-888-687-2277.
Through the AARP website, publications, state offices and community partners, AARP will help beneficiaries get the information and resources they need to make wise decisions about their prescription drug coverage options.
